PANCAKE DAY

What is Pancake Day?
Pancake day is on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday: it is on February or at the beginning of march, six weeks before Easter.
In Britain people eat pancakes on Pancake Day.

In some towns there are pancakes races.
People run through the streets holding frying pans with pancakes.
Each runner throws the pancake into the air and catches it in the pan.

In other countries, people celebrate Carnival at this time of the year .
There are parades through the streets with bands, fireworks and people wearing masks and fancy dress costumes.

RECIPE PANCAKES
Serve these pancakes with butter and syrup.
INGREDIENTS:
•2 cups all-purpose flour, stirred or sifted before measuring
•2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
•1/2 teaspoon salt
•1 egg, slightly beaten
•1 1/2 cups milk
•2 tablespoons melted butter
PREPARATION:
Sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, combine egg and milk; add to flour mixture, stirring only until smooth. Blend in melted butter. Cook on a hot, greased griddle, using about 1/4 cup of batter for each pancake. Cook until brown on one side and around edge; turn and brown the other side. Recipe for pancakes serves 4.
Look at the result. Delicious!!!!

PEACE DAY

International Peace Day is on the 21st September but in our schools we celebrate Peace Day on 30th January (remembering the day Mahatma Gandhi died). Gandhi was a man who believed that Peace was the only way... He never won the Nobel Peace Prize though he had got five nominations to it.
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of six awards in the memory of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of Dynamite. Every year the organization gives out six awards for the people "who best benefit mankind through their actions" in one of the six subjects; peace, literature, physics, chemistry, economics, and medicine.
The Peace Prize is given out in Norway, but the other Prizes are given out in Sweden. This is because Norway and Sweden were one country when the prizes were started.

Peace Day is a day when people ask for peace and harmony for everyone.
This year on this day we are going to sing some songs. Sing with us:

This other song is very beautiful too. Learn it and sing! There are a lot of versions. Here we've got Louis Amstrong's one and Rod Steward's one.
This song talks about a world without wars...
